GHO looks to clear lands infested with explosive mines so that people can return to their homes and their daily routines without the threat of landmines and unexploded remnants of war (ERW). This means that all the mines and ERW affecting habitable regions must be cleared, and these places must be pronounced safe after a thorough inspection. GHO aims to restore peace and security at the community level, so people don’t have to leave in fear or threat of landmines.
Landmines and unexploded cluster bombs aren’t selective in their killing; they are just as likely to kill a child as they are a soldier or an adult. And they keep on killing long after the war has ended.
Landmines and explosive remnants of war injure and kill thousands of people every year. In addition to the human toll, mine action is also responsible for the following:
- Close roads, stop children from going to school, stop farmers from farming
- Hamper social and economic development
- Rob people of their livelihoods
- Prevents reconstruction after war
- Stop safe deployment of peacekeepers and the relief assistances from NGOs
Wars keep causing havoc in regions and within communities globally. If we were to think back to 1999 and 2012, we’d notice that there has been a sudden rise in casualties resulting from explosive ordnance since 2013. Mines, cluster munitions, improvised explosive devices and explosive remnants of war, injured or killed 25 people on average daily in recent years, leaving many with permanent disabilities and psychological trauma.
